To the Editor:
I am writing to support Ranked Choice Voting. In November, 2016, Maine voters will have the opportunity to pass a referendum to institute this most ethical method of electing state and federal officials. No longer will citizens have to choose between voting their conscience and strategizing their vote. Ballots will be able to calculate a first, second, and in some cases, third choice.
Political campaigns should focus on issues that effect voters and their families, not rhetoric maligning other candidates. Elected officials should be representative of the values of the majority of the citizens, not come into power by default. This method of voting would encourage more people to vote and would discourage politicians from engaging in negative campaigns.
In the past nine of 11 gubernatorial elections, the winner received less than 50 percent of votes.
I encourage Mainers to watch a short video about Ranked Choice Voting at rcv.maine.com and vote for the referendum in November.
